COMMON PROBLEMS | ||
Braces are customized and precision crafted for each patient. Jaw movement and food chewing can loosen braces. Please use this guide to help you with specific problems. Wire pokeWire poking may sometimes be due to a loosening of the ligature wires or the end of the arch wire being bent or long. Sometimes you can use the eraser end of a pencil to apply light pressure to the wire that is irritating to the lips or cheek. If this doesn't help, apply wax to the wire and call for an appointment. Wire out of bracket in the back of the mouthWhen you first get your braces, we use thin arch wires. Sometimes these wires pull out, especially when you eat sticky or hard foods. To repair, try placing the wire into the molar tube. If this doesn't work, try using a finger nail clipper to cut the wire behind the next attached bracket. If this doesn't help, call for an appointment. Broken archwire or headgear, lost ligature wire or hookThese problems could cause the teeth to shift in the wrong direction, so they must be corrected as soon as possible. Please call for an emergency appointment. Loose band or bracketIf a bracket or band loosens and is still attached to the wire, leave it in place. If uncomfortable, cover with wax. If the bracket comes out completely, bring it with you to the next appointment. Do not connect headgear or elastics to a loose band.
Tender teethWhen you first get your braces, your teeth may become tender, especially while chewing food. This is normal and due to the gradual correction of your teeth. If necessary, take (2) aspirin, Tylenol or Advil to relieve the discomfort. If this doesn't help, please call for an appointment. Cheek or gum irritationSometimes wires or hooks will rub the inside of your mouth, creating a sore spot. First, apply wax to the wire for relief. If this doesn't help, call for an appointment. InjuryInjuries to the mouth may cause severe cuts to the lips or cheeks. Call for an appointment if you have concerns about mouth injuries. Allergic reactionsAllergic reactions are rare, but may appear as a rash or sore in the mouth. Call for an appointment if you have concerns about allergic reactions. If you feel that the reaction is very serious, go to the hospital emergency room for treatment. Dingus & Rivoli Orthodontics is dedicated to the very best care and comfort for each patient.
